Regional development is a long term process of enhancement of social and economic development in certain area actualised by recognising, supporting and managing development potential of the area (Act on Regional Development of the Republic of Croatia, Official Gazette 147/14).
Different natural, economic, social and historical conditions resulted in unbalanced territorial development level in almost all modern countries. When it comes to objectives of regional development policy, they are defined as similar in most of the countries. Regional development policy is usually focused on recognizing potential, needs and challenges of individual regions and providing additional support to lagging areas and areas with specific obstacles or difficulties (such as islands, mountain areas, enclaves, border areas...). Modern elements of regional development policy are important role of sustainable development and emphasis on areas that can become development engines for wider territory (usually this refers to cities). |
Balanced regional development benefits to all citizens since they continuously pay additional expenses caused by unbalances and they sense the consequences of unbalances. If you are investor, consultant and business service provider, sectoral policy creator or simply choosing the location for one-day trip - in some cases, your choices can influence on more balanced regional development.
